Most men in Singapore wait too long for their first proper health check. A targeted screening — done right and at the right age — picks up cholesterol, blood pressure, blood-sugar and cancer-risk issues early, when they're easiest to manage. Dr Joel Foo offers men's health screening at his Jurong clinic, with packages from $76 and CHAS / Healthier SG Screening subsidies for eligible patients.

What is a Men's Health Screening?

A men's health screening is a structured set of tests designed to pick up common conditions before they cause symptoms — so you have time to act. The big four targets are cardiovascular risk (blood pressure, cholesterol), metabolic health (blood sugar, BMI), cancer risk (colorectal, prostate, sometimes liver) and, where relevant, hormonal and lifestyle factors.

Done well, a screening is a short, practical visit: blood draw, a few measurements, sometimes imaging, and a follow-up consultation to walk you through the results. There are no long waits, no specialist referrals needed, and no obligation to commit to anything beyond the visit itself.

If you've been meaning to "get checked one of these days," this is what that visit actually looks like.

Infographic showing men's health screening recommendations by age tier in Singapore — Under 40 covers basic markers (blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, glucose, full blood count, liver and kidney), 40-49 adds cardiovascular risk, testosterone if symptomatic, PSA if family history, and hepatitis B, and 50 and above adds colorectal cancer screening, more frequent cardiovascular and prostate checks, and bone density if relevant

When Should I Start Screening?

Singapore's national Healthier SG Screening programme (formerly Screen for Life) sets the broad pattern: start with the basics in your 30s, expand at 40, add cancer screening at 50. If you have a family history, smoke, or already have a condition like diabetes or high cholesterol, earlier and more frequent screening makes sense.

Under 40

  • Blood pressure
  • Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference
  • Lipid (cholesterol) panel
  • Fasting blood glucose or HbA1c
  • Full blood count, liver and kidney function
  • STD testing if relevant to your situation

Frequency: every 1–3 years if results are normal.

40 to 49

  • All of the above
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment (blood pressure, lipids, sometimes ECG)
  • Testosterone if you have symptoms suggesting low T (fatigue, low libido, mood changes)
  • PSA testing if you choose to start prostate cancer screening at 45 (family history) or 50 (general population)
  • Hepatitis B status, particularly if not previously checked

Frequency: annually for cardiovascular markers; every 1–3 years for the rest.

50 and above

  • All of the above, more frequently
  • Colorectal cancer screening — faecal immunochemical test (FIT) annually, or colonoscopy every 10 years
  • More detailed cardiovascular assessment where indicated
  • Bone mineral density (DEXA) scan if there's concern about osteoporosis
  • Vision and hearing checks, often outside the standard screening package

Frequency: annually for the cardiovascular and metabolic markers; per the relevant cancer-screening interval for the others.

Dr Joel will tailor the right level of screening to your age, history and any specific concerns. You don't need every test on the list — and you don't need to figure it out alone.

What's Included in a Screening?

A men's health screening typically combines four types of testing, in a depth that matches your age and risk:

Biometric measurements

  • Blood pressure
  • Height, weight and body mass index (BMI)
  • Waist circumference

Blood tests

  • Full blood count (FBC)
  • Fasting glucose and/or HbA1c (diabetes screening)
  • Lipid profile (cholesterol breakdown)
  • Liver function tests
  • Kidney function tests
  • Thyroid function (TSH)
  • Hepatitis B screening
  • Testosterone (if symptoms suggest low T)
  • PSA for prostate-related risk (typically from age 40 if family history, 50 otherwise)

Urine and stool tests

  • Urinalysis (FEME) — kidney, urinary tract and metabolic markers
  • Faecal immunochemical test (FIT) for colorectal cancer screening

Imaging and other tests

  • Chest X-ray
  • Abdominal or prostate ultrasound
  • ECG (electrocardiogram)
  • Treadmill stress test where cardiovascular risk warrants it

Not every package includes all of the above — and that's the point. Dr Joel will help you choose the level that fits your situation, rather than over-screen for the sake of it.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Before Your Visit

Three quick things to sort out before you come in:

  • Bring — a short list of any medications or supplements you take, plus brief notes on past illnesses, surgeries, and any family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer.
  • Wear — comfortable clothing, especially if your package includes a physical examination or imaging.
  • Fast (some packages only) — required for the Ace, Elite, and Marvel-and-above packages. The Noble, Crown, Crown Plus, Royal and Jewel packages don't need fasting unless you add an Ultrasound Abdomen or Ultrasound Liver. If you're fasting: no food or drink (plain water only) for 8 hours before your appointment, and continue all regular medications unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

For accurate cholesterol and triglyceride results, avoid alcohol and fatty meals for 12 hours before any screening — even when fasting isn't strictly required.

On the Day

  1. Brief consultation — Dr Joel reviews your medical history, family history, lifestyle, and any specific concerns. This is also where add-ons or omissions are agreed.
  2. Tests — blood draw, biometric measurements, and any imaging or ECG that's part of the package.
  3. Results — most lab results come back within a few working days. Imaging reports typically follow shortly after.
  4. Follow-up consultation — Dr Joel walks you through every result in plain language, flags anything that needs attention, and discusses lifestyle, repeat-test timing, or specialist referral if needed.

There's no pressure to over-test or over-treat. The goal of a good screening visit is clarity — knowing where you stand, and what (if anything) to do about it.

How Long Will It Take?

The Ace ($76) to Crown ($381) packages take roughly 30–60 minutes. Royal ($667) and above take 2–3 hours, depending on the number and type of tests included. WhatsApp 8893 3757 if you'd like to confirm timing for a specific package before booking.

Time for your health check?

Packages start from $76, with CHAS and Healthier SG Screening subsidies for eligible patients. Same-day appointments at the Jurong clinic — and no referral needed.

FAQ

Men's Health Screening: Common Questions

What men in Singapore most often ask about health screening, costs, and what to expect.

At what age should men start health screening in Singapore?

If you are under 40, basic health checks (blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, blood sugar) every 1–3 years are reasonable. From age 40, screening should expand to cover cardiovascular health and prostate-related markers. From age 50, colorectal cancer screening and more detailed cardiovascular and prostate assessment are added. If you have a family history, smoke, or have an existing condition like diabetes, earlier and more frequent screening may be advised.

How often should I get a men's health screening?

For most men, every 1–3 years is reasonable, with the exact interval depending on age, lifestyle and any existing conditions. Men with high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, or a strong family history of cancer or heart disease may benefit from annual screening.

What's included in a basic men's health screening?

A basic screening typically covers blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol panel, fasting blood glucose, full blood count, and liver and kidney function tests. More comprehensive packages add thyroid function, urine tests, faecal immunochemical testing for colorectal cancer, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for older men, and imaging (chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound). The right level depends on your age, family history and goals.

How should I prepare for my screening?

Three things to have ready: (1) a list of any medications or supplements you take, (2) brief notes on your medical history including past illnesses, surgeries, and any family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer, and (3) comfortable clothing — especially if your package includes a physical examination or imaging. Our team will share any package-specific instructions when you book.

Do I need to fast before a men's health screening?

It depends on the package. Fasting (8 hours, plain water only) is required for the Ace, Elite, and Marvel-and-above packages. The Noble, Crown, Crown Plus, Royal and Jewel packages don't require fasting unless you add an Ultrasound Abdomen or Ultrasound Liver. For the most accurate cholesterol and triglyceride results, avoid alcohol and fatty meals for 12 hours before any screening — even when fasting isn't strictly required. Continue all regular medications unless your doctor has advised otherwise. Dr Joel's team will confirm specifics when you book.

Can I use my CHAS card for men's health screening?

CHAS cardholders may be eligible for subsidised screening under Singapore's Healthier SG Screening programme (formerly Screen for Life), which covers selected tests at $0–$5 depending on your card status: Pioneer Generation $0, Merdeka Generation and CHAS Blue/Orange $2, CHAS Green and eligible Singapore citizens $5. Private packages beyond this scope are charged separately. Dr Joel's team will confirm eligibility when you book.

What is the difference between Healthier SG Screening and a private screening?

Healthier SG Screening (formerly Screen for Life) is Singapore's national programme offering subsidised screening for cardiovascular risk and selected cancers at participating CHAS clinics. It covers a defined panel of tests. Private screening packages typically include a broader range of tests, more imaging options, and longer consultation time. Many men do both — Healthier SG Screening for the basics, then a private package every few years for a fuller check.

How long does a men's health screening take?

Ace ($76) to Crown ($381) packages take around 30–60 minutes to complete. The Royal ($667) package and above take 2–3 hours, depending on the number and type of tests included. Lab results usually come back within a few working days, with a follow-up consultation to walk you through them. WhatsApp 8893 3757 if you'd like to confirm timing for a specific package.

Do I need a doctor's referral for a health screening?

No — you can book a men's health screening directly with Dr Joel's clinic without a referral. The consultation includes a discussion of what's right for you based on your age, history and any specific concerns.

What happens if something abnormal is found?

Most abnormal results are not serious and either need a repeat test or a lifestyle adjustment. If something needs further investigation, Dr Joel will explain the options clearly — that may include additional blood tests, imaging, or a referral to a specialist. Most things picked up early are very treatable.
