Tired all the time, losing muscle, or just not feeling like yourself? A simple blood test can tell you whether low testosterone is behind it. Dr Joel Foo offers confidential testing, interpretation and follow-up care in Singapore — with same-day morning appointments at the Jurong clinic.

A testosterone test is a simple blood test that measures your testosterone level — the main male sex hormone. It's used to check for low testosterone (hypogonadism), which can affect your sex drive, energy, mood, muscle mass and bones.
Low T is more common than many men realise — a Singapore primary care screening of 1,000 men found that around 26.4% had some form of androgen deficiency or low testosterone. Levels also naturally decline with age, typically 1–2% per year from your 30s onwards. If symptoms are affecting your life, a blood test is the first step to finding out what's going on.
Low testosterone doesn't always feel dramatic. It usually creeps in. If any of the following sound familiar, a blood test is worth considering:
These symptoms overlap with depression, stress, thyroid problems and sleep apnoea — which is why a blood test matters. It takes the guesswork out and tells you whether testosterone is actually low, rather than relying on how you feel.
Low testosterone rarely has just one cause. The big three categories:
Because there's usually more than one thing going on, Dr Joel will take a full history and may run other tests alongside the hormone panel — blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid function — to give you the full picture.
The process is straightforward — no special preparation, no needles beyond a standard blood draw:
The total testosterone level is the standard first test. If a fuller picture is needed, the panel can also include free testosterone (the biologically active portion, usually calculated from SHBG), and hormones like LH, FSH and prolactin that help pinpoint whether the cause is in the testes or the pituitary. Dr Joel will explain what's being ordered and why.
One important note: a single low reading isn't enough to diagnose low testosterone. If the first test comes back borderline or low, a second morning sample is usually needed to confirm it.
If your result comes back low and you have symptoms, the next step isn't automatically treatment. It's figuring out why. The goal is to help you feel better, not just to change a number on a report.
In most men, lifestyle and medical factors are driving the low reading — weight, sleep, alcohol, medications, chronic conditions. Addressing these can raise testosterone naturally over several months. Simple things that genuinely move the needle:
If a pituitary, thyroid or other medical issue is found, that's treated directly.
Where hypogonadism is confirmed on repeat testing and symptoms are still affecting your life despite lifestyle changes, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be discussed. TRT is given as an injection or a gel; it's a prescription-only treatment that needs baseline checks (haematocrit and, in older men, PSA) and ongoing monitoring. It should not be used if you're trying to conceive or wish to preserve future fertility. Dr Joel will walk you through the full picture before starting.
Dr Joel Foo offers a confidential men's health consultation to review your symptoms, arrange the right blood tests, and talk through your results. Total testosterone from $38.15, with same-day appointments and morning blood draws at the Jurong clinic.

Common questions Dr Joel Foo is asked about testosterone testing, results and treatment in Singapore.
Consider a testosterone test if you have symptoms of low testosterone — reduced sex drive, erectile difficulties, persistent fatigue, low mood, loss of muscle mass, or poor concentration. Men with conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or unexplained infertility may also benefit from testing.
Testosterone levels follow a daily (diurnal) rhythm, with the highest levels between about 7am and 10am. Blood is usually drawn in this window for accuracy. Fasting is not strictly required for testosterone alone, but if other metabolic tests (e.g. glucose, cholesterol) are being done at the same time, an overnight fast is preferred.
A basic test measures total testosterone. A more complete hormone panel may include sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), free or bioavailable testosterone (calculated), luteinising hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin. These help determine whether low testosterone comes from the testes, the pituitary, or other causes.
A total testosterone blood test at Dr Joel Foo's Jurong clinic is $38.15, and a total plus free testosterone panel is $147.15. A separate consultation fee applies. If you would like a broader check, the Men Wellness package (full body screening plus total testosterone) starts from $152. WhatsApp 8893 3757 for the latest rates.
Laboratory reference ranges vary. The Endocrine Society and the American Urological Association (AUA) generally consider total testosterone below approximately 300 ng/dL (10.4 nmol/L) to be low, while the CDC's harmonised standard uses a slightly lower threshold of around 264 ng/dL (9.2 nmol/L). A diagnosis of hypogonadism requires confirmation on two separate morning blood tests together with symptoms — the number alone is not enough. Dr Joel will interpret your result in context.
Polyclinics in Singapore offer subsidised blood tests for residents; hormone testing may be arranged through them, though referral pathways and scheduling can vary. Private clinics such as Dr Joel's Jurong practice offer self-pay testing with direct access to a men's health consultation. Both options are valid; the right choice depends on cost, scheduling preferences, and whether you prefer a men's health-focused consultation.
Total testosterone results are typically returned within 7 working days. Extended panels that include free testosterone can take up to 4 weeks. Dr Joel will review the results with you at a follow-up consultation, either in person at Jurong or via telemedicine for review.
Low testosterone is usually confirmed with a repeat morning blood test. Dr Joel will look for underlying causes — obesity, poor sleep, chronic illness, medications — and start with lifestyle changes where appropriate. If hypogonadism is confirmed and symptoms are significant, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be discussed.
Coverage depends on your insurance plan and whether the test is considered diagnostic or screening. MediSave generally does not cover hormone testing for general wellness. Some integrated shield plans cover outpatient investigations when clinically indicated. It is best to check with your insurer before booking.
