Why Adult Vaccinations Matter

Most people think of vaccinations as something for children, but adult immunity wanes over time — and some vaccines are better given as adults in the first place. Staying current protects you from illnesses that can be serious in adulthood (flu, pneumonia, shingles, hepatitis), keeps you fit to travel, and helps protect the people around you.

You don't need to remember every vaccine you ever had. Bring whatever records you do have to your consultation, and Dr Joel will work out what's missing, what's due, and what you actually need — without giving you anything you don't.

What We Cover

Vaccines We Offer in Singapore

All of the common adult vaccines below are available at the Jurong clinic. Click through on the ones with dedicated pages for more detail on timing, cost and what to expect.

Seasonal & respiratory

  • Flu vaccine — annual influenza protection; strongly recommended for older adults, people with chronic conditions, and household contacts of vulnerable family members
  • Pneumococcal vaccine — protects against serious bacterial pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections; typically offered from age 50 or earlier in high-risk adults

Childhood catch-up

  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine — adult catch-up for those who didn't complete childhood doses or are unsure of status
  • Hepatitis B vaccine — adult catch-up or booster for those with incomplete childhood immunisation, or at occupational or lifestyle risk
  • Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine — for adults who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine

Age or risk-based

  • HPV vaccine — for eligible adult men and women, protects against genital cancers and warts linked to human papillomavirus
  • Shingles vaccine — typically recommended from age 50, reduces the risk of a painful shingles episode and post-shingles nerve pain
  • Hepatitis A vaccine — recommended for travellers, food handlers, and certain lifestyle or medical risks

Travel

  • Travel vaccinations — including hepatitis A, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, meningococcal disease, rabies and others, depending on destination. Book at least 2–4 weeks before travel where possible.

If you're not sure what you've had or what you need, don't worry — that's the point of the consultation. Bring what records you have and we'll work it out together.

What to Expect at Your Visit

  1. Short consultation — Dr Joel reviews your medical history, past vaccinations, allergies, any current medications, and what you're travelling or at risk for. Takes around 10–15 minutes.
  2. Vaccine administered — given as an injection in the upper arm, usually in seconds. Multiple vaccines can often be given in the same visit at different sites.
  3. Brief observation — a short wait (typically 15 minutes) to check for any immediate reactions before you head off.
  4. Vaccination certificate — you'll receive a record you can use for travel, work, or your personal health file. Travel certificates for yellow fever are also issued if needed.

Mild soreness, redness, or tiredness for a day or two after vaccination is normal. Serious reactions are rare, but Dr Joel will let you know what signs to watch for.

FAQ

Vaccination: Common Questions

What adults in Singapore most often ask about vaccinations.

Which vaccinations do adults in Singapore actually need?

Most adults in Singapore should be up to date with childhood catch-up vaccines (MMR, hepatitis B, chickenpox if not had it), the annual flu vaccine, HPV for eligible age groups, pneumococcal and shingles vaccines from around age 50, and travel vaccines based on destination. What you actually need depends on your age, medical history, what you had as a child, and where you are travelling. A short consultation with Dr Joel can sort this out in one visit.

Do I need a doctor's appointment to get vaccinated?

Yes — vaccines are administered by a doctor after a brief consultation to check your medical history, allergies, any current illness, and confirm the vaccine is appropriate for you. WhatsApp 8893 3757 to book a same-day slot at the Jurong clinic.

What should I bring to my vaccination appointment?

Bring your NRIC or passport, any past vaccination records you have (including your childhood health booklet, if available), a list of current medications, and details of any allergies. For travel vaccinations, bring your travel itinerary and departure date — some vaccines need to be given 2–4 weeks before travel.

Can I get multiple vaccinations in one visit?

In most cases, yes. Several vaccines can be given safely at the same visit, typically in different arms or at separate injection sites. Dr Joel will advise if any need to be staggered — for example, live vaccines sometimes need to be spaced apart, and some travel vaccines need a specific schedule.

What are common side effects after a vaccination?

Mild soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site is common and settles in 1–2 days. Some people get a mild fever, fatigue, or muscle aches for 24–48 hours. Serious reactions are rare but possible — seek urgent medical help for severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, facial swelling) or a high persistent fever.

How long does it take to become immune after vaccination?

Most vaccines take 1–2 weeks to build a protective immune response after a single dose, and 2–4 weeks after completing a multi-dose schedule. This is why travel vaccines are ideally given at least 2–4 weeks before departure. Your doctor will tell you what to expect for each specific vaccine.

Does MediSave cover adult vaccinations in Singapore?

MediSave can be used for selected vaccines under the Nationally Recommended Vaccines list, including influenza, pneumococcal, HPV, hepatitis B and others — subject to eligibility criteria and withdrawal limits. Travel vaccines are typically not MediSave-claimable. Dr Joel's team can confirm eligibility before you book.

Do you offer travel vaccinations?

Yes — Dr Joel Foo's Jurong clinic provides travel vaccinations and pre-travel consultations for Singaporeans travelling regionally or further afield. Common travel vaccines include hepatitis A, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever and others depending on destination. Book at least 2–4 weeks before travel where possible.
