What Does the MMR Vaccine Protect Against?

MMR is a single injection that protects against three infections:

  • Measles — a highly contagious virus that causes fever, rash and cough, and can lead to pneumonia or brain inflammation in adults
  • Mumps — causes painful swelling of the salivary glands; in adults, can occasionally affect the testes (risking fertility), pancreas or brain
  • Rubella (German measles) — mild in adults but can cause serious birth defects if a woman catches it during pregnancy

MMR is a live vaccine, so two doses spaced at least 28 days apart give robust, long-lasting protection. Most adults who had their full childhood immunisation don't need another one — but if you missed doses, have no record, or are planning pregnancy or travel, it's worth checking.

Do I Need an MMR Booster as an Adult?

You should consider the MMR vaccine if any of the following apply:

  • You didn't complete the two childhood doses, or have no vaccination record
  • You're planning a pregnancy and aren't sure you're immune to rubella — this is strongly recommended to protect the unborn baby from congenital rubella syndrome
  • You're travelling to areas with active measles or mumps outbreaks
  • You work in healthcare, childcare, or education — regular contact with unvaccinated people means higher exposure risk
  • You were born outside Singapore where childhood immunisation coverage was limited
  • There's an outbreak in your workplace, community or family

Not sure? Bring whatever childhood records you have. Dr Joel can often tell from your booklet whether you're covered, or run a quick blood test to check immunity if needed.

What to Expect at Your Visit

  1. Short consultation — Dr Joel checks your medical history, allergies, any current illness, past MMR doses, and whether you're planning pregnancy or travel.
  2. Vaccine given — a single injection into the upper arm. Takes seconds.
  3. Brief observation — a short wait (typically 15 minutes) to check for any immediate reactions.
  4. Second dose scheduled — if you need a second dose, Dr Joel will book you in for at least 28 days later.

Common side effects

  • Soreness or redness at the injection site for 1–2 days
  • Mild fever or tiredness
  • A faint, brief rash roughly 7–12 days after the dose — not contagious, settles on its own
  • Occasionally, mild joint aches in adults

Serious reactions are very rare. Seek urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, facial swelling), a high persistent fever, or a rash with widespread bruising.

Important: if you're planning pregnancy

MMR is a live vaccine and should not be given during pregnancy. If you're planning to conceive, take MMR at least one month before trying for a baby. Also avoid pregnancy for four weeks after the dose.

FAQ

MMR Vaccine: Common Questions

What adults in Singapore most often ask about the MMR vaccine.

Do I need the MMR vaccine as an adult in Singapore?

You may need the MMR vaccine as an adult if you didn't complete the two childhood doses, are unsure whether you had them, or have no record. Adult catch-up is particularly advised if you're planning a pregnancy (rubella protects the unborn baby), travelling to areas with measles outbreaks, working in healthcare, or were born in places where childhood immunisation was limited. A short consultation with Dr Joel can confirm what you need.

How many doses of MMR do adults need?

Most adults need two doses of MMR at least 28 days apart to be considered fully protected. If you received one dose in childhood but not the second, a single adult dose may be enough — bring your childhood health booklet if you have it. If you have no record, Dr Joel may recommend a blood test to check immunity or simply proceed with two doses.

Can I get the MMR vaccine before pregnancy?

Yes — MMR is strongly recommended before pregnancy for women who are not immune to rubella, to protect the unborn baby from congenital rubella syndrome. MMR is a live vaccine and should be given at least one month before trying to conceive. It cannot be given during pregnancy.

Is the MMR vaccine safe?

Yes. The MMR vaccine has been used for decades with a strong safety record. Most side effects are mild — injection site soreness, mild fever, or a brief rash 7–12 days after the dose. Serious reactions are very rare. The widely circulated claim that MMR causes autism has been thoroughly debunked by large studies over many years.

Who should not get the MMR vaccine?

MMR is a live vaccine and is not given to people who are pregnant, severely immunocompromised (for example, on active chemotherapy or high-dose immunosuppressants), or who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous MMR dose. If any of these apply, Dr Joel will discuss alternatives with you.

Is the MMR vaccine MediSave-claimable in Singapore?

Yes — MMR is on Singapore's Nationally Recommended Vaccines list and is MediSave-claimable under the Nationally Recommended Vaccination Scheme, subject to eligibility and withdrawal limits. Dr Joel's team can confirm eligibility and help with the claim at your visit.

How much does the MMR vaccine cost in Singapore?

Cost depends on whether you need one or two doses and any consultation fees. Most eligible adults can use MediSave to offset the cost. WhatsApp 8893 3757 for current rates and MediSave eligibility before booking.
